Termino con esta entrada la serie que he dedicado al ganchillo. Hemos hablado de nomenclatura, símbolos y abreviaturas, pero queda un tema que también suele llevar a confusión, la numeración de las agujas.
I finish with this post the series I have dedicated to the crochet. We spoke about nomenclature, symbols and abbreviations, but there is still a topic that usually creates confusion, the numbering of the needles.
Para empezar tenemos que tener claro que el hilo (algodón, lana,...) que queremos utilizar determina el número de aguja porque éste depende de su grosor. Por eso hay que fijarse en las indicaciones de las etiquetas de los ovillos.
For a start, it must be clear that the thread (cotton, wool...) we want to use determines the number of the needle because it depends on its thickness. Therefore, it is necessary to read carefully the indications appearing on the labels of the balls.
Cambiaremos el número que aparece en la etiqueta en función de como tejamos, lo que llamamos "la tensión": si apretamos mucho conviene subir el número, mientras que si tejemos muy suelto lo bajaremos para que el resultado no quede deforme y con agujeros. Normalmente basta con variar medio punto el número de aguja.
We will change the number appearing on the label depending on how we crochet, what we call "tension": if we tighten hard is convenient to take a greater number, whereas if we crochet very loose we will use a lower one so the result does not look deformed and with holes. Usually it is enough to change half a point the number of needle.
Respecto a los patrones, el hecho de no fijarnos en el número de aguja que indican provoca muchos problemas. Si vamos a usar el mismo hilo que el del patrón tejeremos con la misma aguja, aunque teniendo en cuenta la tensión. Pero si cambiamos de hilo tendremos que utilizar otra aguja, con lo que el tamaño de la pieza será distinto. Entonces no queda otro remedio que hacer una muestra, algo que da mucha pereza, ¿verdad?
Regarding to the patterns, the fact of not looking at the indicated needle number causes many problems. If we are going to use the same thread as the one on the pattern, we will use the same needle, though taking into account the tension. But if we change the thread we will have to use a different needle, so the size of the piece will be different. Then we have no choice but making a gauge, but nobody likes doing that, does anybody?
En realidad se debe hacer la muestra siempre porque la tensión hace que el tamaño de nuestro tejido sea distinto a las indicaciones de la etiqueta o del patrón. No voy a intentar convenceros de lo aconsejable que es la muestra, pero si vierais la de veces que mis alumnas, mis amigas y yo hemos deshecho lo tejido por no haber hecho una muestra no lo dudaríais.
In fact, it is necessary to do the gauge always because the tension makes the size of our crocheted piece different from the indications on the label or on the pattern. I am not going to try to convince you of the convenience of the gauge, but sure you will have no doubt if you see how many times my pupils, my friends or I, have had to undo the work because we have not made a gauge.
La muestra es una prueba del patrón que nos permite comparar la medida de nuestro tejido con la medida del patrón o de la etiqueta. Con una sencilla regla de tres calcularemos los puntos y vueltas que tenemos que tejer para lograr la medida deseada.
The gauge is a test of the pattern which allows us to compare the size of our crocheted piece with the size of the pattern or indicated on the label. With a simple rule of three we will calculate the stitches and returns we have to crochet to achieve the wished size.
Yo suelo hacer 20 vueltas de 20 puntos, a no ser que el patrón requiera otra cosa para tejer el dibujo básico.
I use to crochet 20 stitches and 20 rounds, unless the pattern needs another thing to crochet the basic drawing.
Una última cuestión es la equivalencia entre la numeración de las agujas en el sistema métrico, norteamericano, inglés (y canadiense) y japonés. Es otra de las confusiones con los patrones y también hay que llevar cuidado cuando compramos agujas fuera de nuestro país. Tenedlo en cuenta al elegir la aguja:
A last question is the equivalence between the numbering of the needles in U.S., British (and Canadian) and Japanese metric system. This is other confusion with the patterns; and it is also necessary to take care when we buy needles out of our country. Bear it in mind when choosing the needle:
